Silver Moon Bakery, A Neighborhood Staple
By Vera Stein
It’s November and New Yorkers are still flocking to sit outdoors at The Silver Moon Café and Bakery, located at the corner of 105th Street and Broadway. Owner, Judith Norell, hit a nerve in the community when she opened the café in November, 2000. It has become an integral part of life on the Upper West Side.
Drawing inspiration from her travels, historical literature, and art, Judith creates delicious breads, pastries, tarts, sandwiches, and much more. Passionate about what she does, Judith uses mostly wholesome ingredients. “We don’t use preservatives in our breads,” she explains. “We use butter, olive oil, whole wheat, rye, spelt, cornmeal, and all purpose flour.”
Her personal favorite? The Sourdough bread. “I love sourdough, it’s got a very delicate, subtle flavor. It is substantial but not heavy.”
The casual, inviting atmosphere has many locals coming by on a regular basis. Barbara and Stephen, both screenplay writers, have been coming since it opened. Barbara loves the peel-aways; Stephen, the coffee and scones. They have breakfast or lunch at the café, work on their screenplays, and run into neighbors on a regular basis. “Silver Moon has been really important for the neighborhood, and it brings people together.”
Try the Cranberry Currant Scone. As Stephen says, “It’s got a wonderful, light texture, with just the right amount of sweetness.” I wholeheartedly agree. Packed with cranberries and currants, it is filling and satisfying. The Sourdough baguette has the perfect crust, but is light and soft inside. Lightly tangy and delectable, it makes a wonderful accompaniment to soups, salads, and sandwiches. The Pear Tart, thinly sliced pears, encrusted in a golden, light flour crust, filled with almond paste and lightly glazed, is delectable.
Stop by Silver Moon for coffee or lunch. With so many delicious breads, pastries, cakes, and sandwiches to choose from, you and everyone in your entourage will be delighted. And be sure to take home a loaf of sourdough!
