Olukai Shoes Launch New Spring Line with Event at The Holding Company
By Michael Hepworth and Cheri Fox
With the shoe business jumping right now, OLUKAI from Honolulu took advantage of the momentum and threw a big bash this week to launch their new line which ranges from the casual thong, to dress-up boots. The event was held at The Holding Co., a private underground facility in Silverlake that attracted the usual hip and trendy fashion crowd.
The new campaign is called Anywhere Aloha, and there are six people behind the brand—an explorer, an artist, a surfer and three non-Hawaiian’s, presumably businessmen.
Art was also a focus of the evening, as two artists participated in a live mural which was then followed by a mural “white out,” a rare event so I am told. The artists involved were Kamea Hadar from Hawaii, and Los Angeles based artist, Tristan Eaton. Hadar is the Honolulu based co-leader of the Pow! Wow! and Eaton has works on display in galleries all over the world, plus a permanent collection at New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
The cocktail event started early evening in Silverlake and the open bar featured old fashioned gin cocktails, as well as all the usual suspects. Guests were served with tray-passed appetizers from a local gourmet food truck, including ahi tuna tartar, corn flour fish tacos and an assortment of fried appetizers. Many guests including media, artists and the casual sports crowd attended and the along with the shoes, the mural art work was a focal point.
OluKai together with SNL set up viewing stations of the spring women's shoe line, as well as the fall men's shoe line. Special VIP and media guests were invited to try on a pair and feel the luxurious leather and were graciously gifted the latest flip flop designs. This summer sandal was a standout and is designed to impress. With cushioned foot and quality stitching, the sandals wear like a glove, are made with high quality leather and are said to last many seasons. The classic style is a flip flop thong sandal that is timeless and the shoe is very comfortable right out of the box. Additionally, the menswear line had several sporty styles from casual to evening, with a comfortable stylish ease.
Overall we were very impressed with the casual high-quality products of OluKai as they brought the Hawaiian islands to California and can't wait to try the boots in their fall shoe line.
