Baccarat's Le Jardin Sparkles in Midtown
By Doug Singer
Since 1764, Baccarat has been making the world’s finest crystal. Receiving its first royal commission in 1823 began a significant demand by global elites and heads of state throughout the world. Their commitment to superlative quality has remained firmly intact for centuries, so it should be no surprise that their signature hotel just six blocks south of Central Park features a new, beautifully elegant, outdoor dining spot. Perched above the sights and sounds of the city, Le Jardin delivered an experience that clocked extraordinarily high on the opulence meter.
As we made our way through the Petit Salon, it was hard not to notice the shimmer of the ceiling whose paint is embedded with Baccarat crystal chips. These touches are present throughout the property and provide an ambiance like no other. Prior to being seated at our table on the terrace, we chose to have a drink at what is quite possibly the most beautiful bar in Manhattan. Its impressive design captures the spirit of the great American long bars, glamorous 18th-century French hôtels particuliers, and the royal stables at Versailles. The delicate balance of distinctive barrel-vaulted ceilings, natural-wood walls and stunning crystal chandeliers provide a magical environment in which to imbibe.
It should come as no surprise that these sensory stimulants led to elevated expectations as we ventured onto the terrace of Le Jardin. This beautiful outdoor space was strategically situated adjacent to the hotel’s facade of crystal prisms which at the right time of day shoot rainbows across the floor. The environment is a sun-kissed oasis and unexpectedly dotted with orange trees, reflected by similar color accents creating a fresh, welcoming environment. An abundance of white flowering varietals, including Limelight and Annabelle Hydrangea, Misty Lace, and Bleeding Heart, help to create the look and feel of an elegant garden party. If that were not enough, to create a juxtaposition to the city-life below, this al fresco vista also features square cut topiaries and an ivy-laden treillage wall.
As one would imagine, all libations from the hotel’s signature curated cocktail program, as well as their extensive wine selections and the largest champagne list in the country, are served in Baccarat crystal stemware. An inspired light-fare menu created by the hotel’s two Michelin-starred Culinary Director, Gabriel Kreuther provided ample choices to accompany the well-endowed beverage selection.

We dove into the culinary offering with the Baccarat Signature Three Tier. The Warm Lobster Roll (Brioche, Chives, Sumac Aioli, Espelette Pepper), was extraordinarily addictive and was in excellent company with the Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Truffle Mayo, Mini Rainbow Carrots Confit with Cumin, Saffron Beurre Blanc, Tomato Soup) and the Crab Avocado (Citrus Vinaigrette & Gelée, Espelette Chips, Frisée). The quality of ingredients, presentation, and execution was extraordinary at every turn and clearly articulated what one would expect from an upscale dining experience.
Moving on to the entree section of the menu we happily devoured the Marinated & Grilled Lamb Chops (Pea Puree, Couscous, Spiced Lamb Jus). Delicate and perfectly cooked, this was a journey into a pristine delivery that can only be expected from a Michelin-level chef. The same sentiment was present with the Garden Risotto (Acquerello Rice, Artichoke Hearts, Peas, Brussel Sprouts). Before heading back onto the streets of Midtown Manhattan, we took a sweet turn with the Le Grand Dessert Baccarat (Assortment of Petit Fours, Macarons & Chocolats).

Throughout the course of the evening, all of the cocktails, wine, and elevated level of service were a journey through excellence. As is expected with anything that bears the Baccarat moniker, nothing but elegant perfection is acceptable and Le Jardin proved that to be true. Whether you are visiting as a tourist or are a long-time resident of New York City, Le Jardin is a must-try.
