Heavy Water Vodka
By Doug Singer
Heavy Water Vodka, a fairly new contender in the US premium liquor market, has already received five international medals as well as being rated the number one vodka by the New York Post. Its name is derived from the rare isotope D20, which scientists call “heavy water”. For every 6,000 parts of water, there is only one part that is “heavy water”.
Heavy Water Vodka is produced at the Bloomberg estate near the small village of Källby, on the shore of Northern Europe’s largest lake. Made from Scandinavian-grown winter wheat, it is distilled through a continuous still and filtered. The result is a phenomenal product that is balanced and smooth with spicy notes of orange, toasted almond and hints of vanilla. Unlike many spirits these days, they do not use distilled, deionized, designer water. They blend their fermented wheat with deep artisan well water from a subterranean lake formed during the Ice Age. This brings a result that is a vodka that actually tastes like something other than grain alcohol.
At about $32.00, the bottle holding this fine libation is hard to miss as it is extremely unique. It was created by a prestigious French glassmaker and houses a metal rod bearing the brand name. This is a nod to the fuel rods that are immersed in heavy water to generate energy from plutonium.
Heavy Water Vodka is an extremely fine product that is very well made and a must try for the premium vodka drinker.
