Château Tanunda Delivers a Taste of History
By Doug Singer
On a recent, gorgeous summer evening in Manhattan, I boarded the Grand Barossa— Château Tanunda’s 100-foot yacht that has been traversing the water’s of the U.S. coastline to spread the word about the spectacular wines of Australia. Since setting sail from Boca Raton on May 6th, they have called at some 18 ports and held 65 events in 60 days. Touring the East Coast of America, over 1100 guests have boarded this magnificent vessel and the results are unanimous—the wines of Château Tanunda are spectacular. From the Shiraz, to the Chardonnay, to the Cabernet Sauvignon, this is one quality product that boasts a rich history and colorful ownership.

Built in the late 1880s, the Bavarian-style Château Tanunda is not only Australia’s oldest wine Château, but at 37,674 square feet, is also its largest. At one point it was home to the largest winemaking facility in the Southern Hemisphere and is still home to some of the earliest plantings of vines in the Barossa Valley, dating back to the 1840s. When John Geber chanced upon it in 1998, it was a dilapidated shell of its former glory. It took all of one day to decide to take on the task of returning it to its iconic status and the rest is history.
With over half of their portfolio getting 90+ ratings and an extremely impressive list of awards too long to recap, this is a must try for the wine enthusiast and a sip of history for anyone who loves a great revival story.
