Asombroso Pushes The Limit To The Edge In Tequila
By Michael Hepworth
If the design of the Tequila bottle was a major factor in winning gold medals at Tequila events, then Asombroso would be one of the top contenders every time. Luckily the tequila itself is very worthy, and for the second year in a row, the judges from the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition have singled out Asombroso. The 11 year old Anejo this year won the “Top Tequila” award, and the Rick Gamarra created brand has had the experts enthused. Naturally the celebrities were quick to jump on the Asombroso bandwagon, with the likes of P.Diddy, Sugar Ray and Paris Hilton all cavorting at Hollywood insider parties, and the trendy drink has also made appearances in the movie “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,. and trendsetting HBO show Entourage.
The Silver is perfect for the Margarita, and the peppery flavor has hints of fennel, licorice, anise and dried herbs. The LaRosa Reposado, a resplendent tequila that I liked a lot with its red rosy appearance, is aged for three months in French Oak Barrels once used for Bordeaux wine, a truly innovative process that gives the drink a wonderful fragrance. It is best served chilled in a snifter or in a martini. A lovely smooth vanilla finish makes this Reposado a must purchase. There is also LaRosa11 version, the numbers indicating the number of months left aging in the former wine barrels.
The Extra Anejo has been aged for five years in French Oak Casks, and experts have associated this work of art with an aged Cognac or Armagnac . It is best served at or below room temperature in a snifter, and if you are a little surprised by the rather sweet honey like smell of this tequila, it is something you will come to like, rather a lot. The creative design of the bottle really sets this brand apart, and although it is hard to find on the shelves, this is most certainly a tequila to track down and break out at the next party or tasting you are hosting.
