Joey C’s Roadhouse

BBQ is the “grass roots” cuisine of the south and all of us who have driven down the east coast certainly have our favorites. Whether it’s ribs, pulled pork, the “best” corn bread or delicious sides, BBQ is the ultimate fast food.
So how far south do we really have to go to get authentic, outstanding BBQ? Well, believe it or not, only about 65 miles. That’s right, head north from New York City to “Southern” Connecticut, straight to Joey C’s Roadhouse in Milford. Who is Joey C you might ask? Joe (Joey) Catalano is not your typical BBQ chef, but instead a born and bred New Yorker who fell in love with food in his native Queens. After graduating from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America and working his way from California to Manhattan in gourmet restaurants, hotels and exclusive private clubs, he followed his heart and launched Joey C’s a year ago highlighting comfort BBQ with a “twist”. What is so special about this little oasis (only six tables) in Milford? The menu! It’s all about traditional BBQ and includes standards like nachos, guacamole, wings, ribs, brisket, quesadillas, fajitas and of course, let’s not forget the awesome cornbread!
There are also quite a few lighter, healthy choices, designed and executed by Joey’s wife Ania. A chef specializing in gourmet whole foods, her Turkey Chili and Fish Tacos are delicious and satisfying. But for me, the highlight, is certainly the sauces. Made from scratch and sweetened with Agave nectar from Mexico, it is the sauces and the seasonings that distinguish ordinary from extraordinary and all the choices at Joey’s are of the finest quality and prepared fresh daily.

So what is “THE” dish at Joey C's? You know the one that everybody that has been there raves about and says “You have to try this when you go!” Well for me, it’s the ribs that are dry-rubbed with a secret blend of spices, slow-cooked until they fall off the bone and served with a choice of sauces that deliver a BBQ taste that will transport you to Memphis. If that doesn't get you excited, try the sweet and succulent Pulled Pork with the homemade spicy chipotle sauce and you certainly can’t go wrong with the Scalloped Potatoes and the Country Collard Greens.
Then again you can do what I did this past summer. Have Joey’s C's cater a Pig Roast and try some of everything. My friends and family are still raving!
