New Positioning, Package For Hahn SLH Estate Wines
Redesigned Label Reinforces Santa Lucia Highlands as Top Pinot Noir, Chardonnay Growing Region
Hahn Family Wines is promoting the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation with a bold and elegant packaging change to its flagship Hahn estate wines. Starting with the 2012 vintage, the labels of Hahn SLH Pinot Noir and Hahn SLH Chardonnay will have the initials ‘SLH’ as the predominant feature. The changes represent the winery’s ongoing commitment to its long-time home.
“Our Hahn SLH Pinot Noir and Chardonnay embody the Santa Lucia Highlands’ distinct character, and we wanted to raise awareness of the appellation from which these extraordinary wines originate,” said Philip Hahn, second-generation vintner and CEO of Hahn Family Wines. “It’s the location of our vineyards that makes the Hahn SLH wines special.”
Other refinements on the new label include changing Hahn’s emblematic rooster (the word ‘hahn’ in German means ‘rooster’) from red to a gold foil. The new package will begin to ship by mid-February and will be in wine shops later in the month. Hahn SLH Pinot Noir retails for $35 and Hahn SLH Chardonnay sells for $25.
Many wine lovers are discovering what the Hahn family has known for decades: Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH) grows phenomenal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Hahn family patriarch Nicolaus (Nicky) Hahn saw the land’s potential early and purchased SLH property—located in Monterey County—in the late 1970s. Today, SLH is consistently named as one of the top Pinot Noir-growing appellations by the likes of Wine Enthusiast and USA Today.
While Nicky Hahn knew SLH deserved recognition, he wanted wine lovers to acknowledge the region as well. So he spearheaded efforts to establish SLH as an American Viticultural Area, a status it achieved in 1991, to designate the wine grape-growing region known for its distinct geographic and climatic features.
Hahn SLH wines are truly estate wines. Hahn grows 100 percent of the fruit for its Hahn SLH Pinot Noir and Hahn SLH Chardonnay in its Santa Lucia Highlands estate vineyards, makes the wine at the estate winery and also ages it there in small French oak barrels before bottling it on site. Hahn SLH Pinot Noir offers soft tannins along with delicious plum and cherry aromas and flavors. SLH Chardonnay is rich and layered, with silky notes of golden apple, mango and buttered toast.
