Viña La Rosa Chardonnay Sparkling Wine Brut
By Doug Singer
Established in 1824 by don Francisco Ignacio Ossa y Mercado, Viña La Rosa is one of Chile’s oldest wineries. Renowned for its award-winning, estate-grown and bottled wines, the Viña La Rosa vineyard sits on land that was previously owned by Manuel Blanco Encalada, the first president of Chile. When don Francisco Ignacio Ossa bought the estate, the sale included wine barrels, cellars and the estate’s main house. With vines imported from France, this is how the history of “Hacienda y Viña La Rosa” started.
The Ossa seal is still present after almost two centuries and today Viña La Rosa is able to proudly show the results of the enormous development that the company underwent during don Recaredo Ossa’s management in the 1930’s.
Made solely from Estate grown fruit, the Viña La Rosa Chardonnay Sparkling Wine Brut is made by the Charmat method of secondary fermentation, the same used for most sparkling wines outside of Champagne and Cava. Chardonnay being the prime grape of Champagne makes this wine exhibit similar flavor - fresh citrus fruit with tropical fruit tones. This delicious bottle is complex with layers of flavor ranging from strawberry, to minerals and caramel. It can hold its own alongside food, but is also smooth enough to drink alone. A great value for the price.
