Bärenjäger - Honey Liqueur
By Doug Singer
In the forests of medieval Europe, mighty woodland warriors known as “bärenjägers”, or bear hunters, would leave their huts and take to the woods in search of glory. All of these adventurers were valiant, but those who were a bit more resourceful discovered a powerful potion to aid them in returning to their villages victorious. They lured their prey with “meschkinnes,” a mead-like moonshine made from honey by beekeepers and local farmers. Each seemed to have their own secret recipe.

A connoisseur's guide to the good life.

After the bear would have its fill of the meschkinnes, the hunter would have its way with the bear. I’m guessing that these hunters would imbibe in a bit of the ‘bear bait’ to calm their nerves, as this was dangerous business.
Based on these brews, in 15th century East Prussia, the Teucke & Konig Bear Trap Company introduced Bärenjäger, the first professionally produced meschkinnes. Today, the sophisticated set continues to enjoy the time-honored taste of this brand, as Schwarze & Schlicte carries on the tradition. Bärenjäger ($29.00 / 750ml) is a delicious vodka-based liqueur that can be enjoyed by itself, in a delectable concoction, or drizzled over a dessert. The Bärenjäger bottle, which is wrapped in wicker with a plastic honeycomb cap, is about as ‘old school’ as it gets. Bärenjäger liqueur is made from a few simple and delicious ingredients, that when properly combined, give this honey liqueur its unique flavor and exquisite aroma, which bring a rich history with each delicious sip.
